Case Studies - Betty

Continuing to Live at Home

Betty is living with dementia at home with her husband Barry who is her full time carer.

Betty has the most amazing relationship with her Personal Assistant, Michelle. The support Michelle provides not only enables Betty to enjoy doing things she has always loved such as baking and gardening but it also provides much needed respite for Barry.

He says that Michelle’s visit enable him to have ‘me-time’ to pursue his own hobbies.  For him this is so incredibly important.  It means he can do things he is unable to do when he is caring for Betty as her illness means that she becomes anxious if she is not by his side.

Michelle and Betty enjoy looking through old photographs and sharing memories. They garden together and bake together so Betty can treat her husband to tea and cake and enjoy tea parties in the garden.   Michelle enables Betty to do things she couldn’t do alone and ensures Betty can continue to live at home with Barry and enjoy spending their time there together.

Barry says “Betty is always very relaxed when Michelle visits.  Betty used to love to bake, so being able to do this with Michelle’s support makes such a difference to her wellbeing”.
