Dementia and Carer Support: Ken’s Story

When Dot was diagnosed with dementia, Ken’s life changed. From being her husband and lifelong companion, he also became her carer, learning first-hand about the emotional and practical challenges that come with supporting someone living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
For Ken, the journey brought difficult moments, including loneliness and isolation. But through a carers support group, he found connection with others who understood what he was experiencing.
Ken’s honest and practical advice quickly became valued by others, with people regularly telling him:
“You should make a guide.”
That encouragement led to “Ken’s Top Tips” — a dementia support guide based on his own experiences, compassion and years of caring for Dot. Read Ken’s guide here: Ken's Top Tips
One of Ken’s most important messages is:
“Be good to yourself first, then do something nice for yourself.”
His words highlight an important part of the Alzheimer’s journey that can often be overlooked: the wellbeing of carers. Supporting someone with dementia can be challenging, and carers need support, understanding and time for themselves too.
This Alzheimer’s Awareness Day, Ken is sharing his story to help others understand the realities of living alongside dementia. His experience reminds us that an Alzheimer’s diagnosis affects more than one person — it can impact relationships, routines, independence and family life.
But with the right support, understanding and connection, families do not have to face the journey alone.
Ken’s story is one of love, resilience and the importance of finding support along the way.
