Every Tuesday morning, Mathew volunteers at St Giles Bookshop in Ashby, supported by Liz, who has been by his side for nearly ten years. Together, they’ve built a volunteering routine that has become a real highlight in Mathew’s life.
Finding the right placement wasn’t easy at first, but St Giles proved to be the perfect fit. With Liz’s support, Mathew quickly grew in confidence, forming strong relationships with the manager and staff. Each week, he chooses a lanyard – which he is very proud to wear, greets the team, and gets stuck into work.
Mathew takes on a variety of tasks, from delivering the shop’s important letters to the Post Office — where he is always met with a smile and friendly conversation — to running errands or carefully pricing books. He’s also a natural at welcoming customers, offering a big smile and opening doors.
Liz is always there to provide encouragement and support, but it’s Mathew’s enthusiasm, pride, and positive energy that shine through. Whether he’s greeting customers, browsing his favourite guitar books, or chatting to familiar faces on Market Street. Mathew’s enthusiasm and kindness brighten the bookshop each week and make it a wonderful place for staff and customers to be.
With Liz’s support, Mathew has found a place where he feels valued, included, and proud of his work — together they’ve built a partnership that has supported Mathew to grow in confidence and thrive in his role. We are all very proud of Mathew at Enrych.
